8. Desktop Mode and independent power input
What is Desktop Mode? Desktop Mode is designed to extend the product’s lifespan (by reducing battery usage) and to increase output power and drive capability. Many of FIIO’s later products also feature this mode.
On the QX13, when Desktop Mode is enabled, the hardware activates four op-amps in parallel for higher current output, significantly boosting power output (driving ability). The independent power input port allows the QX13 to run directly from an external power supply, reducing the phone’s battery drain and helping to extend its lifespan.
Is it necessary to always enable Desktop Mode during normal use? No. Whether to enable Desktop Mode depends on personal listening preferences, the heat generated by the QX13, and your tolerance for phone battery consumption. It is meant to be a customizable option.
How to enable Desktop Mode on QX13?
Use the “D.MODE” toggle on the QX13 to switch on/off the Desktop Mode.
When switched to ON, Desktop Mode is enabled, increasing the device’s power, gain, and driving force—ideal for high-impedance or harder-to-drive headphones.
When switched to OFF, Desktop Mode is disabled, suitable for daily listening and low-impedance, easy-to-drive headphones.
A comparison of power output with and without Desktop Mode is shown below:
Independent power input of QX13
The QX13 is designed with two Type-C ports. The bottom USB port is for connections with mobile phones, tablet PCs, or computers. The side orange USB port is dedicated for external independent power input. When connected to a power adapter, the independent power port allows the QX13 to unleash greater performance and driving power while preventing battery drain on the connected phone.
Independent power input takes priority. Once connected, the QX13 will draw power from the independent port instead of the phone. The independent power supply must provide at least 5V/1A.
Can Desktop Mode be enabled without external power? Generally yes. When paired with Android phones, iPhone 15 series, or computers, Desktop Mode can be enabled even without an external power supply. However, with other Apple devices, external power is required to use Desktop Mode.
Can QX13 reach 900mW output in Desktop Mode without external power? Yes, as long as the USB port provides sufficient power, it can still reach 900mW (we have confirmed this with some Android phones). If the USB port cannot provide enough power, Desktop Mode will automatically disable (the “D” icon on the screen will disappear).
Can external power be used when Desktop Mode is disabled? Yes. When both the main and the side USB power ports are connected, the QX13 will prioritize power from the side port.
